What is Girls on the Run? Girls on the Run® is an after school program that uses the power of running to help prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Through interactive activities such as running, playing games, and discussing important issues, participants learn how to celebrate being girls. The program focuses on building self-esteem and improving emotional and physical health. During the 12-week program, girls are empowered wit h a greater self-awareness, a sense of achievement and a foundation in team building to help them become strong, contented and self-confident young women.

Lessons include topics to enable girls to grow strong during adolescence. Topics include dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer-pressure, making healthy decisions, and contributing to the community.

The goal for Girls on the Run is to EMPOWER all girls to...

  • have a strong sense of identity
  • give and receive support from a group
  • stand up for themselves in a healthy manner
  • have a healthy body image
  • understand their importance in the community
  • complete a 5K run/walk event

Who can participate? Girls in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades can participate in Girls on the Run. Girls on Track is for girls in 6th, 7th and 8th grades and will be offered next spring.

Where will the program be held? For your convenience, your child can attend the program where she attends school. The Selinsgrove Intermediate School will be providing a space on the campus and will run from 3:30 till 4:45 p.m. The Midd West School District will have sites at West Snyder and Middleburg Elementary Schools and will run from 4 till 5:15p.m.

What is the cost? While the cost of our program is typically $150, we have had generous donors contribute to our scholarship fund to offset the general operations of the program. Therefore, the cost will be $80 for the Fall 2010 season. This includes program t-shirts, tools, liability insurance, snacks and 5K registration and general operation costs. Scholarships are still available to girls unable to cover the full fee.

Girls on the Run International is proud to partner with New Balance, Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes, Secret deodorant, Horizon Fitness, Goody Products, and Carolina Pad. Our national sponsors provide vital support to advance the mission of our organization.

New Balance is now offering running shoes to girls who cannot afford them. Vouchers for shoes will be given on a first-come first-served basis upon review of needs application.

Local sponsors also make a big difference to our program. Many thanks to the following Pennsylvania businesses:

Dental Care Associates, Lewisburg Wal-Mart, Selinsgrove Wal-Mart, Sire Advertising, TSZ Design, Weis Markets, Pepsi Bottling Company

Because of the support of our national sponsors, we do offer scholarships for girls who may not be able to afford the total fee. Applications for scholarships are available upon request.

What happens at the end of the 10 to 12 weeks? Participants will have completed training for either running or walking in their first 5K race that will take place at Susquehanna University and will be open to the public. The girls will be assigned a “Running Buddy” to support them through the race. Participants will also have completed a community service project that they will decide on as a group. We will celebrate the girls’ accomplishments through the program with a banquet where they will receive awards for their participation.
